Elise Friedericke Hensler was born in 1836 in Zurich, Switzerland. She is better known by her title, Elise, Countess of Edla. She was a Swiss opera singer, actress, and writer who spent most of her adult life in Portugal. She is best known for her relationship with King Ferdinand II of Portugal, who she married secretly in 1869. Elise Hensler's father was a wealthy entrepreneur and her mother was a talented singer. Elise inherited her mother's vocal abilities and pursued a career in opera. She debuted in Zurich in 1856 and later performed in London and Paris.
