Elise, Countess of Edla Bio
Elise Friedericke Hensler was born in 1836 in Zurich, Switzerland. She is better known by her title, Elise, Countess of Edla. She was a Swiss opera singer, actress, and writer who spent most of her adult life in Portugal. She is best known for her relationship with King Ferdinand II of Portugal, who she married secretly in 1869. Elise Hensler's father was a wealthy entrepreneur and her mother was a talented singer. Elise inherited her mother's vocal abilities and pursued a career in opera. She debuted in Zurich in 1856 and later performed in London and Paris. She eventually settled in Lisbon, Portugal, where she became a renowned actress and singer. It was in Lisbon where Elise met King Ferdinand II of Portugal. The two fell in love, but their relationship was met with disapproval from Ferdinand's court. They were forced to keep their relationship secret for years until they finally got married in a private ceremony in 1869. Elise became known as the Countess of Edla and lived with Ferdinand in a secluded palace in Sintra, Portugal. Elise and Ferdinand's relationship was passionate but also tumultuous. They had two children together but their marriage was plagued by scandals and rumors. Ferdinand's health also deteriorated during their time together, and he died in 1885. After his death, Elise returned to the stage and wrote several plays and novels. She lived the rest of her life in Portugal, and died in 1929 at the age of 93.
