Gregory Gaye Bio
Gregory Gaye was a Russian-born actor who enjoyed a successful career in both his native country and in the United States. Born on October 10, 1900, in St. Petersburg, Gaye grew up during a tumultuous time in Russian history. Despite the challenges he faced, he showed a gift for acting from a young age, and he pursued his passion throughout his life. Gaye began his career in Russia in the 1920s, performing on stage and in silent films. In 1925, he appeared in his first feature film, "The Extraordinary Adventures of Mr. West in the Land of the Bolsheviks," directed by Lev Kuleshov. Over the next decade, Gaye continued to work steadily in Russian cinema, appearing in over 50 films. In 1936, Gaye fled Russia with his wife, actress Tamara Geva, and their son, fearing persecution under the Communist regime. They settled in the United States, where Gaye quickly found work in Hollywood. He made his American debut in "Knight Without Armour" (1937), starring Marlene Dietrich and Robert Donat. Gaye quickly became one of Hollywood's go-to actors for playing villains, appearing in films like "Ninotchka" (1939), "Casablanca" (1942), and "Spellbound" (1945). Despite his success in Hollywood, Gaye never forgot his roots. He continued to speak Russian fluently and maintained close ties with the expatriate Russian community. He died in Hollywood on August 23, 1993, at the age of 92, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most talented actors to ever come out of Russia.
