He predominantly played as an infielder for the Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals between 1985 and 1992. Newman was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and attended Rockhurst High School, where he excelled in both baseball and football. He went on to play college baseball at Texas Tech University before being drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 4th round of the 1981 MLB Draft. Newman's professional career began in the minor leagues, where he played for various teams, showcasing his skills as a versatile infielder. He rapidly climbed through the ranks, demonstrating his agility, speed, and quick reflexes on the diamond. His exceptional performances in the minor leagues earned him a promotion to the big leagues, where he made his MLB debut with the Minnesota Twins in 1985.
