Ernest Givins, born on September 3, 1964, is a former professional American football player who gained recognition as a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL). Hailing from the United States, Givins is widely regarded as one of the most talented receivers of his era, known for his speed, agility, and ability to make acrobatic catches. He had a successful career that spanned from 1986 to 1995, playing for two NFL teams: the Houston Oilers and the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Givins began his football career at Eisenhower High School in Houston, Texas, where he quickly made a name for himself as a standout athlete. His exceptional skills led to a scholarship offer from the University of Louisville, where he continued to excel on the field. During his time at Louisville, Givins caught the attention of NFL scouts, paving the way for his professional career.
In 1986, Givins was selected by the Houston Oilers in the second round of the NFL Draft. His rookie season saw him make an immediate impact, recording an impressive 50 receptions for 955 yards and 3 touchdowns. Givins became an essential part of the Oilers' high-powered offense and quickly developed into a fan favorite due to his electric playing style and charismatic personality.
During his eight seasons with the Houston Oilers, Givins proved to be an integral part of the team's success. His exceptional performances earned him three Pro Bowl selections in 1990, 1991, and 1992. Givins was known for his ability to make difficult catches in traffic, utilizing his speed and agility to create separation from defenders. He formed a formidable receiving duo with fellow Oilers receiver Haywood Jeffires, which helped the team reach the playoffs multiple times during the early 1990s.
