He was born on August 22, 1932, in Denver, Colorado, and grew up with a deep fascination for science and technology. Carr's early passion for space would eventually lead him to become one of the esteemed members of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Carr's interest in engineering led him to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Southern California in 1954. With his passion still burning strong, he went on to earn a Master of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the same institution in 1961. Following his education, Carr joined the U.S. Marine Corps where he served as a fighter pilot for several years. His dedication, skills, and exemplary service caught the attention of NASA, and he was selected as a member of NASA Astronaut Group 4 in 1966. Carr's illustrious career as an astronaut began with his first space mission, which was a pivotal part of the Apollo program. He served as the command module pilot of Apollo 7, the first manned mission post-Apollo 1 tragedy. Launched on October 11, 1968, Carr and his crewmates successfully completed an 11-day, earth-orbiting mission, conducting a wide range of experiments and evaluations to test the capabilities of the spacecraft. In addition to his pioneering work on Apollo 7, Carr's most noteworthy achievement was his role as the commander of the Skylab 4 mission, also known as the third and final manned visit to the Skylab space station. Launched on November 16, 1973, the mission duration of an astonishing 84 days set a new record for the longest human spaceflight at the time. Throughout the mission, Carr and his crew conducted numerous scientific experiments and performed vital maintenance tasks, establishing a legacy of commitment to exploration and expanding our understanding of space.
