Monte Clark was an American football player and coach, widely known for his contributions to the National Football League (NFL). Born on March 24, 1937, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, Clark established himself as a talented offensive lineman during his playing career. He played college football at the University of Southern Mississippi and was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the 1959 NFL Draft. Clark went on to play 11 seasons in the NFL, primarily as an offensive tackle for the 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys.

Following his playing career, Monte Clark transitioned to coaching and quickly made a name for himself in the NFL. He began his coaching journey as an offensive line coach for the San Francisco 49ers in 1972. Clark's expertise in offensive line play and his ability to develop talented linemen led him to become one of the most respected offensive line coaches in the league. His coaching prowess was evident when he helped guide the Miami Dolphins' offensive line during their perfect season in 1972, which culminated in a Super Bowl victory.

In 1975, Monte Clark took the reins as the head coach of the Detroit Lions, a position he held for eight seasons. Under his leadership, the Lions experienced moments of success, including a division title in 1983.
