Ayers' love for basketball started during his high school years at Springfield South High School. He excelled on the court and ultimately earned a scholarship to play for Miami University. As a standout player at Miami, Ayers had an impressive career and led his team to the NCAA Tournament. His skills earned him a spot in the Miami University M Club Hall of Fame in 1986.
After his college career, Ayers transitioned into coaching, beginning as an assistant coach at Ohio State in 1981. His talent and dedication secured him a position as an assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA from 1983 to 1986. Ayers then returned to Ohio State in 1986 as an assistant coach, later ascending to the role of head coach in 1989. Following his stint at Ohio State, Ayers continued his professional journey in the NBA, serving as an assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers from 1997 to 2003.
