Buddy Baker, born Elzie Wylie Baker Jr. on January 25, 1941, is an American former professional stock car racing driver and hall of famer. Hailing from Florence, South Carolina, Baker became one of the most prominent figures in NASCAR during the 1970s and 1980s. With a career spanning over two decades, Baker earned numerous titles and records, cementing his place amongst the most successful drivers in the history of the sport.
Baker made his debut in NASCAR's premier series in 1959 and quickly established himself as a formidable force on the track. Standing at an imposing 6 feet 6 inches, his towering presence earned him the nickname "Leadfoot" and commanded attention on the raceway. Throughout the 1970s, Baker achieved remarkable success, securing 19 victories, including notable wins at the Daytona 500, World 600, and Southern 500, three of NASCAR's most prestigious races.
In addition to his accomplishments as a driver, Buddy Baker also made significant contributions to the sport off the track. Following his retirement from racing in 1994, he transitioned into broadcasting and became a popular NASCAR analyst and commentator.
