The Whispering Woods
In the quiet town of Elmsbrook, there was a dense forest known as the Whispering Woods. The townspeople avoided it, especially after dark, for it was said that once you entered, you could hear voices whispering your darkest fears. One evening, a group of friends—Jack, Emily, Mark, and Lisa—decided to explore the woods. They were thrill-seekers and dismissed the stories as mere superstition. Equipped with flashlights and a sense of adventure, they ventured into the forest just as the sun began to set.As they walked deeper into the woods, the trees grew thicker, and an unnatural silence enveloped them. Their laughter and chatter soon faded, replaced by an uneasy feeling that settled in their stomachs. The path became less defined, and the darkness closed in around them."Do you hear that?" Lisa whispered, her voice trembling. The others paused and listened. At first, there was nothing, just the sound of their own breathing. Then, faintly, they heard it—a soft whispering, as if the wind itself was speaking to them."It's just the wind," Mark said, though he didn’t sound convinced. They pressed on, but the whispering grew louder, more distinct. It seemed to come from all around them, echoing through the trees. The words were unclear, but the tone was unmistakably sinister.Emily stopped abruptly. "We should go back. This doesn't feel right."Jack, always the bravest, or perhaps the most foolish, shook his head. "We’ve come this far. Let’s see what’s ahead."Reluctantly, the group continued. The whispering became more intense, and the air grew colder. Suddenly, their flashlights flickered and went out, plunging them into darkness.Panic set in. They called out to each other, but their voices were drowned out by the whispers, which now seemed to chant in a low, rhythmic murmur. Emily felt something brush against her arm and screamed."Let's get out of here!" Jack yelled, grabbing Emily’s hand and pulling her along. They stumbled through the darkness, the whispers growing louder, forming coherent words now: "Leave... you... shouldn't... be... here..."Lisa tripped and fell, her flashlight clattering to the ground and miraculously flickering back to life. In its dim light, she saw them—pale, ghostly figures emerging from the shadows, their eyes empty and mouths moving in sync with the whispers. She screamed, scrambling to her feet and running blindly through the trees. The others followed, their hearts pounding with terror. The forest seemed to close in around them, the path twisting and turning, leading them deeper instead of out. After what felt like hours, they burst into a small clearing. In the center stood an old, weathered stone with strange symbols carved into it. The whispers ceased abruptly, leaving a deafening silence."We need to go back," Emily sobbed, clutching Jack’s arm.Jack nodded, his bravado shattered. "Stay close. We stick together."They turned to leave the clearing, but the way they had come was no longer there. The trees had shifted, the path completely gone. The forest had trapped them.Desperation set in as they tried to find a way out. The whispers returned, louder and more insistent, filling their minds with fear and despair. One by one, they began to succumb to the forest’s malevolent influence.Lisa was the first to vanish, swallowed by the shadows when she strayed too far from the group. Mark followed, his screams echoing through the trees before being abruptly cut off. Emily clung to Jack, but her strength waned, and soon she too was taken, her final cry mingling with the whispers.Jack, now alone, ran until he could run no more. Exhausted, he collapsed at the foot of a massive oak tree. The whispers surrounded him, a cacophony of voices that grew louder and louder until they were all he could hear.In the town of Elmsbrook, the disappearance of the four friends became another tale of warning. No one dared to enter the Whispering Woods again, especially after dark. For those who ventured in never came out, and their whispers joined the chorus, forever haunting the dark, twisted heart of the forest.

What's your favourite horror genre and why?
Mine is werewolves, even though it's rare and the good ones are far in between. 🐺😁
