Otto Hartmann was an Austrian mathematician, computer scientist, and cryptographer, who made significant contributions to the field of cryptology during the 20th century. Born on 7th July 1918 in Vienna, Hartmann was interested in mathematics from an early age. He earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Vienna in 1940 and joined the Austrian army during World War II, where he worked as a cryptography expert. After the war, Hartmann worked as a cryptographer for the Austrian Ministry of Defense and the Austrian Federal Criminal Police. He had developed an interest in computer science during his time in the army, and in 1952, he joined the Institute for Applied Mathematics at the University of Innsbruck, where he lectured on numerical analysis and computer science. Hartmann's research focused on stream ciphers, a type of encryption that converts plaintext into ciphertext one bit or byte at a time. He developed several secure stream ciphers and contributed to the design of the A5/1 and A5/2 ciphers used in the GSM mobile phone system. Hartmann also made significant contributions to the theory of the Enigma machine, the encryption device used by the German military during World War II. In recognition of his contributions to cryptology, Hartmann was awarded the RSA Conference Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. He passed away on 10th February 2006, at the age of 87, but his work remains influential in the field of cryptology to this day.
