Angiolo Vestris was a French dancer and choreographer who made a significant contribution to the development of ballet in the 18th century. Born in Paris in 1729, Vestris was the son of a renowned Italian family of dancers who had settled in France. He trained under his father, Gaetano, who was a ballet master at the Paris Opera. Vestris made his debut at the Paris Opera in 1748 and quickly became known for his elegant dance style and virtuosity. He was credited with introducing several new innovations to the art of ballet, including a more naturalistic approach to movement and a greater emphasis on expressiveness and emotion. In addition to his talents as a performer, Vestris was also a highly acclaimed choreographer. He created numerous ballets for the Paris Opera, including Les Petits Riens (1778), which featured music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Psyche (1790), his last and most famous work. Over the course of his career, Vestris trained many of the most famous dancers of his time, including his own son, Auguste Vestris, who would go on to become one of the greatest male dancers in history. Vestris died in Paris in 1808 at the age of 79, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence the world of ballet to this day.
