Shot down during the Battle of Britain in September 1940, this BF-109 is an E3 variant, Werk Nummer 1190, built in September 1939 by Erla Maschinewerk in Leipzig. Issued to Jagdgeschwader 26, its first pilot was Group Commander Karl Ebbighausen, a Spanish Civil War veteran, who shot down 5 allied aircraft during the Battle of France and Dunkirk evacuation. He flew this aircraft in July and possibly August 1940 as his victory markings are still visible on the tail. He was shot down and killed off the English coast on August 16, 1940, obviously not in this aircraft. After a partial E4 upgrade with a new DB601 engine, in September 1940 this aircraft was issued to Horst Perez, who was escorting one of the last major bombing raids of the Battle of Britain when he was bounced by Spitfires of 92 Squadron over Eastbourne. RAF pilot Don Kingaby claimed the kill, even though no bullet holes were found in the airframe. Probably suffering an engine failure, Perez landed wheels up in a field near East Dean in Sussex.
