I could write SO MANY essays about this book/anime series but my thoughts on its specific entry as a "love story," I feel, I the most appropriate here.

Yes, there is boy-meets-girl. Yes, they have an endearing dynamic and have a great time showing off their characterization during what WOULD be, were it not for the otherwise dire circumstances, a first date. It even breaks the mold in a fun way by having the female lead's father figure chaperone them through the whole ordeal. Very fun. Very cute. NOT my focus.

This boy, barely eighteen, is struggling to grapple with previously-unexperienced feelings. That process is ugly. And this magnificent work of art does not shy away from the ugly - it shoves it in your face in 4k. The whole awful obsessive-possessive mentality that many young men experience and spend months or even decades grappling with. Emilia's very sensible - and pained - reaction to his meltdown. The development that follows, for both of them. But that STILL isn't the end.

Every single one of the big main villains, the Sin Archbishops of the Witch's Cult, has their own horrible, warped definition of love that they set out to fulfill.

Petelguese is something of a manifestation of Subaru's one-sided obssessive infatuation. He wants nothing else but Satella's approval and stops at nothing in seeking it, to the point of willfully abandoning his own identity and individuality. Sirius, his self-described "wife," is much of the same towards him, to the point of wholly disregarding his boundaries and furiously attempting to cling to any remaining trace of him in the world.

Capella demands the love and attention of everyone and everything around her. She'll transform herself into whatever she thinks the other person wants, and she'll transform everyone they have into something unlovable in order to always make herself appear in the best light - to twist everyone's affection her way. She refuses to let others see her as the bad guy, but then gets confused when they DO see her that way anyway.

Regulus believes himself to love his wives, and in the sense that they are his possessions, he does - he cannot stand to see his possessions cry, so he forbids it. He can't stand to see them in any other form than when he received them, so they're disallowed to smile as well. They're less wives, and more porcelain dolls that walk, talk and work. And the reason that he's decided he loves them? He likes the way their faces look - thus, their faces must not change, or he may decide he no longer loves them. Purely superficial.

The Gluttony siblings... would be a spoiler to discuss, but it does obviously have to do with subsuming the whole of an individual into their own beings, and they decide this is how they show love.

Nearly all of the supporting cast have their own love stories to contend with as well. Familial and romantic both. One of the characters accidentally Stockholm syndromes herself with the person directly responsible for the deaths of her entire race, and then the PERPRTRATOR of that crime starts trying to unravel that FOR her because he can't mentally or emotionally process it.

Tl;Dr this show is good stuff and I cannot recommend it enough.
