However batman believed to be dead activates his contingency plan to save the justice league, and each one you save you can play as opening up possible sequels to other heros.

That I really like swing music. I have since I was little (1990’s). But I never knew why I always wanted to listen, why I remembered the chips ahoy commercial 15 years later. I just found the answer, Batman the Animated Series. They play swing in the background, in the clubs and restaurants. So the most pivotal being in my young life was accompanied by what would end up being a hidden appreciation.

In honor of the upcoming Legacy of the Dark Knight in 2026, I am replaying the Arkham trilogy (for the who-knows-how-many-times) on Switch. The second game still holds up so well.

Batman, the Dark Knight of Gotham, has long captured the imagination of readers and viewers not merely for his gadgets, his intelligence, or his rogues' gallery, but for the haunting contradiction at the core of his crusade: his vengeance is cruel, yet it is undeniably good. Through the lens of psychoanalysis, we can understand how this paradox is not a flaw but the very essence of his myth. Batman's story is one of trauma transformed, of a fractured psyche wielding cruelty as a weapon for justice. It is through this inner darkness that he becomes not a monster, but a savior.

At the origin of Batman is a traumatic rupture. As a child, Bruce Wayne witnesses the murder of his parents—a formative shock that freezes him in a moment of helplessness and loss. In Freudian terms, this trauma creates an unresolved conflict that festers within the unconscious. Rather than confronting this grief directly, Bruce sublimates his pain, channeling it into the creation of a symbolic persona: Batman. The Bat is a displaced form of aggression, a mask under which Bruce wages a war on all crime as a surrogate for the singular act that shattered his world. Every criminal becomes, in part, the murderer of his parents, and thus each encounter is a reenactment of that primal wound.

Despite this rage, Batman is not ruled by his id—the instinctual and chaotic part of the psyche. Instead, he operates under a rigid superego, a moral compass forged from pain and discipline. This is most evident in his refusal to kill. His code may appear self-imposed, but it reflects an internal moral law that governs even his darkest actions. His cruelty is calculated, his violence restrained. He becomes a living boundary between justice and vengeance, using fear as a tool without surrendering to it. In this way, the cruelty of his vengeance is not evil; it is a principled aggression, a way of restoring balance without becoming that which he despises.

Carl Jung’s concept of the shadow further illuminates Batman’s character. The shadow is the repository of all repressed desires, fears, and instincts—the aspects of the self that the conscious mind refuses to acknowledge. Most individuals either ignore or are consumed by their shadows. Batman, however, integrates his. He dons the mantle of darkness not to become evil but to harness it in service of good. By confronting and owning his shadow, Batman achieves a kind of individuation—a Jungian wholeness that allows him to act with profound self-awareness. In embracing the Bat, Bruce becomes more human, not less.

Yet Batman is forever haunted by lack, a Lacanian void that can never be filled. His vengeance is not about retribution for his parents alone, but an endless attempt to correct a universe that permitted such a senseless act. He is an echo of that absence, patrolling the night in search of something that cannot be found. This lack drives him, but it also gives his mission depth and urgency. His cruelty, then, is not born of sadism but of sorrow—a sorrow so vast it becomes a moral imperative.

The result is a hero who is neither clean nor pure, but necessary. In a city as broken as Gotham, Batman’s brand of justice—harsh, terrifying, relentless—is paradoxically a form of mercy. His enemies are those who exploit fear, chaos, and cruelty for personal gain. Batman weaponizes these same elements, but in the name of protection, order, and hope. He is the monster that guards the gate, the darkness that keeps greater darkness at bay.

Thus, through the psychoanalytic lens, Batman's vengeance is not only understandable but laudable. His cruelty is not a flaw—it is a scar, carefully wielded. He is the knight whose armor is made of pain, whose sword is forged from trauma. And in choosing to fight rather than fall, to protect rather than punish, Batman shows us that even the most wounded among us can become a force for good. Not despite their scars, but because of them.
