Based on the novel of the same name, the film is the cinematic take on the family life of renowned playwright William Shakespeare. Technically brilliant, which gives you shades of classics like 'Barry Lyndon', the film progresses poetically, but then it becomes too poetic and draggy till the pre-climax, where the dramatic execution of 'Hamlet' (originally Shakespeare's dead son) intrigues you till the end. Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley elevate the film well. Watch for its screenplay, performances and technical brilliance.

Hamnet (2025/ English)

What could have been easily summed up in a short or feature documentary film ends up being dragged to a feature film, which surprisingly is an Academy Award nominee for the Best Foreign Language Feature Film! Really? The film focuses on a father's quest for his daughter, on whose pursuit he encounters some ravers and joins them. Then all the film does is travel, travel, and travel with some shades of tragedy and some narrative cinema, giving out some message of freedom amidst conflicts. While the film is brilliant in its score, cinematography and sound design (also nominated for an Oscar), the rest of the viewing exercise turned out to be a sham, making me wonder what the jury was smoking up while selecting this film, along with another sham, 'The Secret Agent' (Brazil) for the Best Foreign Language Film category. Anyway, watch this at your own risk.

Knight of Seven Kingdoms EP 5

A must-watch thriller that's engrossing from start to finish. Merciless, vividly real, and masterfully executed. 💯 The amount of effort that went into making it must have been enormous. An actual 10/10, the less you know going in, the better. Seriously, watch this movie!

Sorcerer (1977)

Phew! Finally, some breezy respite from the high-pitched cinematic politics of January this year, amidst which this film came and struck some gold. Anyway, the film revolves around a Village Panchayat president who is torn between two neighbouring houses where two things: a funeral and a marriage, have to take place at the same time. Celebrated Malayalam filmmaker Nithish Sahadev (of 'Falimy' fame) strikes gold with his rooted screenplay and direction, which is layered (bringing out some relevant issues like patriarchy and toxic masculinity) and gives out shades of Premchand, and the hit web series 'Panchayat'. He manages to hold the audience despite some slight drag in the pre-climax portions. Jiiva (also the film's creative producer) is just brilliant and does full justice to his role, and is well aided by the veteran Illavarasu. A winner all the way, watch this and have your share of a healthy viewing.

Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil (2026/ Tamil/ Netflix)
