21 years ago, when I was in 7th class at Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1, Sector 47, Chandigarh, I often used to read a message written in cursive handwriting on a fine cut blight-blue chart paper on a Notice Board, close to our Principal's cabin: 

"Electricity is a Good Servant, But is a Bad Master"

Now replace the word 'Electricity' in the above sentence with 'Internet', yet the impact remains the same. This is what the film 'CTRL' tells you about. 

Divided within different screen formats (mostly digital ones), this extremely engaging and important film of our times must be seen for its message, honesty and grit to show how 'bright' the technological future is. Vikramaditya Motwane, who struck gold last year with the web series 'Jubilee' on Prime, comes back with a banger film on Netflix which is intriguing and carries a very important message of how the internet and technology can be dangerous that owns your psyche completely and that's what's happening. It's all based on how you take control of it. Thankfully I am not following any influencer or any fool of that sort.

 Anyway, craft-wise, the screenplay and VFX are amazing. While the final moments do somewhat make you asking for more.   The compact cast is fantastic and Ananya Panday gives her career's best performance. After 'Gehrayiyaan', 'Kho Gaye Hain Hum Kahaan' and 'Call Me Bae', one must give to her for her efforts and the way she is putting her feet to seal her place as a reliable artist. She is the next USP of the film after the master maker Motwane. Give this a watch.

Revisited 'Singh Iss Kinng' (Hindi-Punjabi/2008/ YouTube and Prime Video-in some locations). Ironically, the film that was initially looked down upon by many critics despite its financial success, enjoys a mass cult following today. While somewhat the characters and even the dialogue in the film stand relevant on many counts. A village simpleton is indirectly thrown out of the village due to his naughty antics and lands up at the gates of a dreaded don, only to reform his goons without violence. It's quite extraordinary to execute this with a good balance of action and comedy. There is a scene in the film, where Akshay Kumar's 'true identity' is revealed in front of the law-abiding Katrina Kaif only to be confronted by the gang members of his brother (Sonu Sood), who were once against him. Every dialogue in that scene is worth pondering. Plus the characters are well-chalked and staged where Yashpal Sharma as Pankaj 'Udaas' (not Udhas), Javed Jaffery as Mika, Kirron Kher as Katrina Kaif's mother (Both KK!) and Ranveer Shorey as Puneet shine. In patches, Katrina Kaif surprised us. Now when it comes to music, Pritam churned out some 'original' blockbusters (read that again) where 'Bass Ek Kinng', 'Talli Hua' and 'Teri Ore' are brilliant. Not forgetting the RDB and Snoop Dogg collaboration that was a chartbuster. Truly one of Akshay Kumar's finest films ever, making me miss that legend who has now fallen prey to mindless materialism in the name of 'acting'.

Revisit: Singh Is Kinng (2008)

Late to the party, but after a lot much of hype and so-called theories, I finally took the effort to see this film in 3D. The overall exercise is worth it, where a new different world is explored through the vision of National Award-winning filmmaker Nag Ashwin (director of the 2018 classic 'Mahanati') and mythological stories and characters are incorporated into it. What took me was the way the music director Santhosh Narayanan (famed to be the popular musician of 'Resistance') has been properly utilized, where he gives every character one unique style of music and also makes the screen experience worthy. While the film is technically brilliant with great action sequences, cinematography, production design, costumes and even the background score, the narration, as many have pointed out, does lack impact in its build-up. After the interval block, it picks up, leaving out with a gentle cliffhanger, thus preparing you for the second part, similar to how Mani Ratnam did with the 'Ponniyin Selvan' series.  

Though most of the cameo appearances look out of the place (including that of SS Rajmouli who is taunted by Prabhas in the film for his next 'Bahubali' thingy), the Malayalam cinema team of Dulquer Salmaan and Anna Ben are cute and killer. Shobhana is sensuous and powerful and appropriate for her role. I found Pasupathy packing a better shoulder after his similar charm in classics like 'Kannathil Muthamittal', 'Virumaandi' and 'Sarpatta Parambarai' where he did the same. Brahmanadanam is underwhelming and Anil George repeats his Mirzapur stunt with darker shades. Deepika Padukone fluctuates and Prabhas works in parts, unlike his villainous counterpart Saswata Mukherjee who is brilliant as the tyrannical gentleman. Kamal Haasan leaves out a positive cliffhanger in his few moments that shall be enhanced in the next part of the film, but Amitabh Bachchan is the real hero, who is a brave samaritan and warrior. He is quiet, and composed, yet a keeper and killer. He carries the film on his shoulders. Overall, A film that is truly an all-and-all theatrical experience.

Kalki 2898 AD (Telugu dubbed in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada/2024/ In Cinemas) Review

As we bask in the cinematic glory of the film 'Maharaja' (2024), did you know that the film has a big circle of co-incidences? 

The film is the second outing of 'Makkal Selvan' Vijay Sethupathi and Anurag Kashyap. The two artists had also come together earlier with the film 'Imaikka Nodigal' (2018) where Sethupathi had a cameo appearance and Kashyap, played the antagonist. 

The film also stars celebrated cinematographer N. Natarajan Subramaniam 'Nutty', who is being praised for his role as the 'Grey' Cop. This is also not the first time when he and Kashyap came together for a film. It was he, who was recommended by veteran filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma to Kashyap and shot his initial films 'Last Train To Mahakali' (Short/1999), 'Paanch" (2002) and 'Black Friday' (2005)! Along with these, he also shot popular films like 'Parineeta' (2005), 'Jab We Met' (2007), 'Raanjhanaa' (2013) and 'Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty' (2014)!

How's it?

This documentary by Siddhartha More is an intimate take on a theater troupe led by the celebrated thespian Rajat Kapoor which adapts Shakespeare through the art of clowning. This is India's answer to the Academy Award-winning 'Night For Day' (1973) by Francois Truffaut which provides an interpersonal connection with and within the artists and how they come together to bring a near-to-impossible vision on stage. With a great cast having the likes of Vinay Pathak, Ranvir Shorey (presently a Bigg Boss contestant), Jim Sarbh, Kalki Koechlin and Tillotama Shome, the film opens up a new dimension about what goes inside backstage, that ends on the front to the beholder. The cinematography here is a real winner, where the quality doesn't matter and it's all the action that does the talking.

Clowning With Shakespeare (2022/ English-Hindi/Movie Saints) Review

India is not completely ready for such home-grown action films where there is zero melodrama but more action and gore, that has taken the global cinema by a huge surprise. While in the action genre, we have had some nice recent additions like 'Thallumala', 'Animal' and 'Captain Miller' that had layered emotions and multiple sub-plots, this film purely rests on one-on-one action which has been brilliantly shot, staged and cut. What is worth noting (also surprising) about this film is that there is no misogyny, division (you know what), and even toxic masculinity, where even women participate in killing off the baddies in the typical Korean. Certainly, you can't see it twice. But obviously, this is a film that deserves to be experienced on the big screen once for a 'Kill-er' impact. Lakshya and Raghav Juyal are perfect in their lead debuts and Nikhil Bhat comes with flying colours for coming with his astounding direction where despite a slightly slow build-up, the film intrigues you well.

Kill (Hindi/ 2023/ In Cinemas) Review

The film is a true winner on all counts and its success on the critical and financial fronts speaks enough. Based on the life of visually impaired industrialist Srikanth Bolla (this dude is my age!), the film smartly narrates his story with a limited and meatier cast and story blocks, despite a bit of an off-track romantic angle and also a little 'Shri 420'-ish drag in the second half. A perfect inspirational tale by Tushar Hiranandani, which engages and intrigues you, giving you life lessons that could also be followed by the people 'who can't see'  (watch the film to understand this).  After a long time, I thoroughly enjoyed the background score in any film. In the cast, Jyothika, Jameel Khan and Sharad Kelkar are great supports, Aleya F provides a mature act and Rajkummar Rao is truly a 'biopic favourite', as he seamlessly gets into the shoes of the real-life character after his prowess (in playing real-life characters) in 'Chittagong' 'Shahid', 'Aligarh', 'Omerta' and then 'Bose: Dead Or Alive' and ends up charming us with a riveting performance. Don't miss this one. Watch this film with family and children.

Srikanth (Hindi/2024/Netflix) Review

Revisited the film 'Gayab' (2004/Hindi/ Youtube). Minus the useless songs except for the title one and some irrelevant moments, this film stands true to this day on many counts. You have a nobody who works to save his neck in the maddening crowd,  parents who are a perfect balance of gentle and loud and love life. Suddenly you get disappeared and that creates a mad vigilante out of you. Not surprisingly, part of it is indeed relatable a lot that provides you a nice character study. Despite his present (and consistent) stupidity, RGV did give us some gems that are worth enjoying today. Apart from Prawal Raman' s narration, it was Amar Mohile's BGM that added more weight.  'Gayab' I believe, was ahead of his times where Tushar Kapoor actually did a great job with a powerful backing of Raghubir Yadav and Govind Namdeo.
