Today’s topic: why collars are NOT FOR CATS. 


Collars may look harmless, but for cats they can be dangerous and even life-threatening. 

- even an indoor cat can get a collar caught on a door handle, hook, or furniture and choke. A cat trying to remove its collar can trap its paw or even its jaw inside it (there are plenty of photos online, very drastic)
- collars with bells are especially harmful. A cat’s hearing is far more sensitive than ours, and constant noise close to their ears can cause stress, irritation, behavioral issues, and even hearing damage. Besides, cats try to function as quietly as possible. Putting something that makes constant noise on their neck is against their nature and needs
- “breakaway” collars are often promoted as safe, but they have no reliable certification. A collar that opens 99 times might fail the 100th and that one failure can cost a cat its life
- collars with GPS: don’t even make me start on that topic. I’ll write about it some other day but for now: cats are INDOOR ANIMALS and should never roam free on their own. For accompanied walk there is a better option such as harness
- chemical collars, like pheromone or tick collars, also carry risks. They can irritate the skin, cause allergic reactions, or create open wounds (pictures can also be found online). Safer alternatives exist: plug-in pheromone diffusers or topical tick treatment


Cats are perfect the way they are and don’t need any extra clothes and accessories. They’re also not our dressup dolls!
Please don’t put anything on your cat just because you think it looks cute.
