Newbie in henna world

I'm trying to find a way to stain my nails black (or close to black, I'm not that picky) because I find nail polishes to be frustrating in how quickly they chip and have to be redone.  I found a reddit post a few months ago that talked about using henna followed by indigo to achieve that dark stain effect, but so far it hasn't really been working for me.  The henna stains the nail fine, I enjoy the orange color I get (I mean, it's usually a brighter burnt orange color, so the orange could be darker too, but I'm light skinned, so I don't know how dark I'll really be able to get it), so if that's the extent of the nail staining I can do, it's not the end of the world.  I still want to try to get the darker color, closer to black, if I can, but every time I put the indigo on after the henna, it almost seems like it fades the orange instead of darkening how it's supposed to?  I'm mixing the henna with warm water and apple cider vinegar for the acidity, and the indigo with cool water because I read somewhere that heat helps the color come out in henna but it's supposedly the opposite for indigo?
Is there anyone on here who does anything like this and wants to weigh in with advice or tips on how I could improve the color deposit?
