It has been an interesting challenge maintaining a Linux From Scratch (LFS) virtual machine for the last almost 5 months. With the help of AI, I've managed to create scripts for maintaining the system and building packages. These scripts mostly use the LFS and Beyond LFS (BLFS) systemd development books and extract instructions from them on how to build packages. By "development" I mean the latest developmental branch of the distribution, as opposed to its stable branch. These scripts are far from perfect though. They sometimes fail to update packages, especially big packages like qt6, firefox and rust and groups of packages like plasma-all and frameworks6. Today, in fact, imagemagick and gtk3 both failed to build correctly, so I wrote my own custom build scripts for them that fixed the problem. Many packages in the virtual machine I've actually been maintaining at their latest upstream version, even when that version isn't in the LFS/BLFS book. For instance, I have KDE Plasma 6.7.2 installed, even though 6.6.5 is the latest version packaged in the book. I am actually quite surprised I've managed to maintain the virtual machine for so long, given that it has quite a complete set of packages including both KDE Plasma and GNOME desktop environments. I've also installed GNU Octave, Julia and R as these are useful tools for a mathematician/statistician. The "636" in the hyfetch output refers to the number of LFS and BLFS book packages I have installed and maintained using the book instructions. "57" refers to the number of packages installed from custom packaging scripts I've written. "1" on the same line as the "57" refers to the number of Julia packages I have installed. "74" refers to the number of Python packages I have installed. "29" refers to the number of R packages I have installed. The background to this screenshot is one of my photos taken at Jezzine Barracks in April.

Custom phone setup works amazing!

Super proud of myself 😀 I put a Linux distro via Phosh on a Pinephone, and got the Bluetooth to work on my car's stereo system! Works as good if not better than, let's say, Spotify on an iPhone or Google-based Android. 📱 What helped is transferring files with ripped CDs in it over to the microSD... read more

Linux from Scratch: wallpaper-changing buttons.

Given all the photos I've taken on my bike trips, I thought it was time to give my Linux From Scratch (LFS) virtual machine the ability to easily change between wallpapers with the click of a button. I've already given my NixOS host system this ability. So I added three app launchers to my dock... read more

Leaving Windows

It's still complicated to end a relationship of over 20 years with a system, but definitely Windows is digging its own grave by trying to force chatbots and AI despite having "eliminated" Copilot, not to mention all the bloatware that consumes resources. Enjoying my dual monitor setup with Hyprland and NixOS

I've been tweaking my Hyprland setup to accommodate my new dual monitor setup and it's been fun. The most challenging part has been just getting my Waybar to work for me. Webcam rant

I've been on a crusade to find the best webcam for Linux. You'd figure any UVC compliant webcam would do but you'd be wrong. Linux users of Boo: what is your go-to distribution? Why? Feel free to list more than one distribution.

For me, the answer is Arch Linux and NixOS. I love how on Arch Linux, it is usually possible to get any piece of software I want with minimal fuss. If the software somehow isn't in Arch's repositories, including the Arch User Repository (AUR), I can always package it for myself as Arch's packages... (edited) read more
