According to Plato, love can be compared to a severe illness or madness because it can overpower reason and disturb a person’s normal judgment. However, Plato also sees love as a powerful force that can lead the soul toward beauty, wisdom, and the Good.

Gray tones

I remember the first time I heard "I love you." I was seven or eight years old. That word was new to me, and my curiosity consumed me so much that I asked that person what it meant. I received a look that at the time I didn't understand, but that I learned to recognize over time: pity. I was broken… read more

According to Plato, you owe me a conversation. Prove him right?

"Human nature was not originally the same as it is now, but quite different. First of all, the sexes were three in number, not two as they are now; there was man, woman, and the union of the two... Then Zeus and the other gods took counsel what to do... Zeus said: Methinks I have a plan which will… read more

Plato's Missing Half

Is love just a feeling, or is it a quest for completeness? The ancient Greek philosopher Plato offered a fascinating, poetic idea about love. He suggested that human beings were originally created with four arms, four legs, and one head with two faces. Zeus, fearing their power, split them in… (edited) read more

Eco on gods as forces

I've been reading Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco and enjoying it. I typically plow through fiction, but I'm finding myself engaging it as if it were nonfiction: slowly, re-reading passages, taking marginal notes. I found this passage and the larger context in which it arose really… read more

Love: According to the Ancient Greeks

I'm seeing a lot of fear of missing out (FOMO) as Valentine's day approaches. There are so many reminders of romantic love that it makes the perception of lack and incomplete-ness all the more obvious, as if we have a chasm that must be filled, and filled fast. The perception if it doesn't… (edited) read more

The Allegory of the Cave

Plato uses a metaphor to illustrate the journey from ignorance to knowledge. The story begins with a group of prisoners in a cave, chained so that they can only see what is directly in front of them. They are unable to turn their heads and see the world beyond the shadows on the wall. This… read more

Why are quotes attributed to Plato when it was his characters that spoke?

It's weird that something said by a character in a fictional book is somehow attributed as a quote by Plato himself? I've noticed Friedrich Nietzsche quotes are like that too. He writes a fictional story, and then people take things said by his characters and attribute them to him. It's like… read more

The vast majority never crosses the line

The noumenal realm was originally defined by Plato as the world of ideas apprehended by the philosophical, rational mind while the phenomenal realm was the world of sensory reality in which the unphilosophical and animalistic were permanently trapped i.e. their primitive minds could never take them… read more

Oldest book ever (24th century BC): Instruction of Ptah-Hotep

This book was written almost 2000 years before Plato was born, and is currently the oldest book we've found in human history. There's strength in realizing you can't control outside events or other people, but have power over yourself.

~Plato (paraphrased)

Plato....

So recently I've been researching theories about what drives us, not ambitions or goals but truly what consciousness or forms are inside us. Clearly there are battles inside us so there is more than one, I've rested (so far), on an idea similar I think to that of Plato's. There are three, do you… read more
