Started talking to this guy. He started talking about living together and kids and our future. We have been talking for a while now and so me being a human being thought we were a couple. But to be sure I asked. And he replied.. no we are just friends. So I politely backed off.  Stopped treating him like my boyfriend and started treating him like he's my friend. Why get boyfriend benefits if your not my boyfriend right?  And he noticed and now he's upset with me. Am I in the wrong?

I've recently tried talking to people one on one again in here, but it's so hard! Some people only answer my questions back and don't propose a topic, so it shows obvious lack of interest, doesn't it? So frustrating! 🤯

Have they truly lived enough life to understand what they’re asking? At that age, many people are still driven by fantasies about marriage, relationships, children, and the idea of a “perfect family.” But fantasy and reality are very different things. Have they experienced betrayal, heartbreak, emotional exhaustion, financial pressure, or the disappointment that comes from investing years into someone who ultimately was not right for them?

People rarely talk about the psychological and emotional maturity required to build a healthy relationship. Neuroscience shows that the human brain especially the prefrontal cortex responsible for judgment, impulse control, analytical thinking, and long-term decision-making does not fully mature until around the mid-to-late 20s. That alone explains why many people change dramatically between their early 20s and their 30s.

The older I get, and the more conversations I have with people my age or older, the more I realize how common broken relationships and single-parent households actually are. Global statistics consistently show high rates of divorce, separation, and emotional dissatisfaction in relationships. Many single parents once believed they had found “the right person,” only to later discover incompatibility, emotional neglect, instability, or unequal responsibility in raising children.

Yet society still repeats the same tired narrative as if choosing to remain single automatically means someone is lonely, selfish, immature, or somehow contributing less to society. But is it really better to force yourself into a relationship simply because society expects it? Is it better to stay in something unhealthy because you’re afraid of starting over, because children are involved, or because you’ve already invested too much time?

Sometimes being alone is healthier than constantly struggling to make a relationship survive.

Being single does not mean a person has failed. In many cases, it means they understand themselves well enough not to settle for emotional dependency, instability, or incompatibility. Peace, independence, and self-respect are valuable forms of happiness too.

Before building a family, a person should first be capable of building a stable life for themselves. If someone does not have the time, financial stability, emotional balance, or ability to properly care for themselves, how can they realistically provide care, guidance, and stability for another person or for children?

It’s actually a very simple idea:
If you cannot consistently provide yourself with proper care, healthy living, emotional stability, and basic quality of life, then taking responsibility for additional lives becomes much more difficult.

Growing older teaches people that love alone is not enough. Compatibility, maturity, responsibility, communication, emotional intelligence, financial stability, and self-awareness matter just as much if not more.

There is nothing wrong with choosing peace over pressure, self-awareness over social expectations, and stability over appearances.

It’s exhausting hearing people in their early 20s constantly ask questions like, “Why are you still single?” as if being single is some kind of failure or unfinished stage of life.
