Tom Terriss was a British actor and writer who rose to fame in the late 19th century. He was born Thomas Edwin Cannon Terriss on 20 February 1847 in Liverpool, England. Terriss came from a family of actors and began his career by working in theatre companies across the UK. He was known for his performances in the works of William Shakespeare and was also an accomplished playwright. During his career, Terriss appeared in numerous plays and stage productions, including the original West End production of Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera, The Yeomen of the Guard. He also wrote several plays, including the popular melodrama, In the Ranks, which was performed at London's Adelphi Theatre in 1870. Terriss' acting and writing talents earned him a reputation as one of the leading figures in the British theatre scene at the time. Aside from his professional achievements, Terriss was also known for his personal life. He had a long love affair with the actress and singer Adelaide Neilson, who was considered one of the most beautiful women of her time. The couple had a son, but their relationship was cut short when Neilson died at the age of 33. Terriss never fully recovered from her death and continued to mourn her for the rest of his life. In 1897, Terriss was tragically murdered by a fellow actor named Richard Archer Prince. The incident shocked the theatre community and led to changes in security measures at theatres across England. Despite the tragic end to his life, Terriss' contributions to the British theatre scene continue to be celebrated today. He is remembered as a versatile actor and talented writer who made significant contributions to the arts industry.
