Carol Channing was an American actress, singer, and comedienne, known for her distinctive voice, wide smile, and charismatic stage presence. Born in Seattle, Washington in 1921, Channing grew up in San Francisco and began performing in local shows at a young age. She attended Bennington College, but left after two years to pursue a career in theater. In the 1940s, she made her Broadway debut in "Let's Face It!" and subsequently appeared in a number of musicals, including "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" and "Hello, Dolly!" Channing's most iconic role was that of Dolly Gallagher Levi in "Hello, Dolly!" which she first played in 1964. The role earned her a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical and cemented her status as a Broadway legend. She went on to tour with the show and revived the role several times throughout her career. Channing's other notable stage credits include performances in "The Vamp," "Lorelei," and "Thoroughly Modern Millie." In addition to her work on stage, Channing also appeared in several films and television programs throughout her career. She received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the 1967 film "Thoroughly Modern Millie," and appeared in other films such as "The First Traveling Saleslady" and "Skidoo." She also made appearances on numerous television shows, including "The Love Boat," "The Nanny," and "The Drew Carey Show." Channing continued to perform well into her later years, and was known for her witty and spirited personality both on and off stage. She passed away in 2019 at the age of 97, leaving behind a legacy as one of the great performers of the Broadway stage.
