Ann Sothern

Ann Sothern Bio

Ann Sothern was a popular American actress and singer who was born in North Dakota, United States in 1909. She was born Harriette Lake to a talented family of vaudeville performers. Her mother, Belle LaMont, was a concert pianist, and her father, Jack Lake, was a comedian who taught her how to sing as a child. She started her entertainment career at the age of six as a child performer. Sothern's family moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, and then to Shenandoah, Iowa, where she finished high school. She then moved to Hollywood, California, where she began her acting career taking supporting roles in several films. Her breakthrough came in 1939, with an MGM screwball comedy "Maisie” where she played the lead role of Maisie Ravier. That role set the tone for most of her career, as Sothern became a mainstay of light comedy, musicals, and B-movies. During the 1950s and 1960s, Sothern reinvented herself on television starring in various series, such as "Private Secretary" and "The Ann Sothern Show." Although Ann Sothern was born in North Dakota, she had a proud Irish heritage. Her grandparents immigrated to the United States from Ireland in the mid-1800s. Despite never visiting Ireland herself, Ann felt a close connection to her Irish roots, and was once quoted as saying "I move around a lot, but I'm really an Irish peasant at heart." Her family lineage also influenced her music career, and she recorded several Irish folk songs throughout her life. Ann Sothern was a talented performer who captivated audiences with her wit, charm, and singing voice. She died in 2001, leaving behind a legacy of entertainment that spans over six decades. In her lifetime, Sothern received numerous accolades for her contributions to the entertainment industry, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She will always be remembered as one of America's most beloved actresses, and as an important figure in the history of Hollywood's golden era.
