As a young man, Kossoff studied at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and later joined the Army during World War II, serving in the Middle East. After the war, he resumed his career as an actor, and his first major breakthrough came in the 1950 film, The Blue Lamp.
Kossoff went on to appear in numerous other films over the years, including A Kid for Two Farthings (1955), The Mouse That Roared (1959) and The Day the Earth Caught Fire (1961). He also worked extensively in television, where he appeared in BBC productions such as The Larkins, Emergency Ward 10, and EastEnders. Not only was Kossoff a talented actor, but he was also a writer of children’s literature and a renowned storyteller. He wrote several children’s books, including The Magic Wheel, which became an instant classic.
In addition to his film and television work, Kossoff was a passionate advocate for peace and was even awarded the Peace Medal by the United Nations in 1980. He became interested in this cause after witnessing the aftermath of the atomic bomb while serving in the Army during World War II. In the 1960s, he helped to found the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, and he was involved with many other organizations throughout his life that promoted peace and harmony in the world.
