Nicholas Courtney was an English actor, best known for his role as Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart in the long-running science fiction television series Doctor Who. He appeared in over 100 episodes of the series between 1968 and 2008, making him one of the show's most enduring and beloved characters. Over the course of his career, he also appeared in a variety of other television shows and films, including The Sarah Jane Adventures and The Bill. Born on December 16, 1929, in Cairo, Egypt, to English parents, Courtney spent much of his early life abroad due to his father's job as a British diplomat. He attended a variety of schools in different countries, including the prestigious Radley College in England, before studying at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He began his acting career in the mid-1950s, appearing in a variety of stage productions before moving on to television and film work.
