Alfred Jerger
Alfred Jerger Bio
Alfred Jerger was an Austrian operatic bass-baritone and an accomplished singer of his time. He was born on July 8, 1915, in the city of Vienna, Austria. Jerger began his musical training at the Vienna Music Academy before joining the Vienna State Opera in 1939, where he made his debut as Dr. Grenvil in Verdi's La traviata. Jerger quickly rose to fame and became one of the leading bass-baritones in Austria during the 1940s. He was known for his deep, rich voice and his ability to convey the emotions of the characters he portrayed on stage. His performances in roles such as Monterone in Rigoletto and Wotan in Wagner's Das Rheingold were particularly noteworthy. Jerger's career was interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the German Army. However, he was able to resume his career after the war and continued to perform throughout Europe and the United States. He was also a regular performer at the Salzburg Festival, where he appeared in productions of Mozart's Don Giovanni and Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier. In addition to his work as a singer, Jerger also served as a professor of voice at the Vienna Music Academy. He was recognized for his teaching abilities and for his dedication to his students, many of whom went on to have successful careers in opera. Alfred Jerger passed away on February 15, 1992, in his home city of Vienna, leaving behind a legacy as one of the great operatic bass-baritones of his time.
