Born in La Mesa, California, in 1952, Walton began his basketball career at the high school level, leading Helix High School to two consecutive CIF San Diego Section championships. He then went on to attend the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he became one of the most decorated college basketball players of all time.
During his time at UCLA, Walton played under legendary coach John Wooden, leading the Bruins to two NCAA championships in 1972 and 1973. He won numerous accolades, including the NCAA Player of the Year award, and was also named an All-American three times. After his college career, Walton was drafted as the number one overall pick by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1974 NBA draft.
Over the course of his 10-year NBA career, Walton played for several teams, including the Trail Blazers, the San Diego Clippers, and the Boston Celtics. He is best known for his time with the Trail Blazers, where he won the NBA championship in 1977 and was named the Finals MVP.
