Rose was born on January 30, 1973, in Detroit, Michigan, and his family was deeply involved in basketball. His father, Jimmy Walker, was a professional basketball player in the 1960s and 1970s, and his mother, Jeanne Rose, played competitive basketball in high school. Rose attended Southwestern High School in Detroit, where he started playing basketball and became one of the top high school players in the country. After high school, Jalen Rose attended the University of Michigan, where he played college basketball for the Wolverines from 1991 to 1994. He was a member of the "Fab Five," a group of five highly recruited freshmen that included Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King, and Ray Jackson. The Fab Five led the Wolverines to two consecutive NCAA championship games in 1992 and 1993, both of which they lost. Rose's tenure at Michigan was marked by controversy, including allegations of academic fraud and improper gifts to players. Jalen Rose was selected 13th overall by the Denver Nuggets in the 1994 NBA draft. He played for the Nuggets from 1994 to 1997 before being traded to the Indiana Pacers, where he played from 1997 to 2002. Rose was known for his versatility as a player, able to play multiple positions on the court. He was also known for his scoring ability, averaging over 20 points per game in three different seasons.
