However, his career was interrupted by World War II when he was drafted into the Imperial Japanese Army. After the war, Ryō Ikebe returned to acting, quickly establishing himself as a leading star of the Japanese cinema during the post-war period. His ruggedly handsome looks and immense talent won over audiences and critics alike. He gained recognition for his roles in films such as "Satō no Yukue" (1947) and "Shinda Koi wa Nijiiro ni Kagayaku" (1949). Ikebe's versatility as an actor allowed him to excel in a variety of genres, from drama and romance to action and period films. One of his most notable collaborations was with director Akira Kurosawa in the film "Yojimbo" (1961), where Ikebe played an important supporting role. Throughout his career, he worked with some of the most prominent directors in Japanese cinema, including Mikio Naruse, Yasujirō Ozu, and Masaki Kobayashi. Ryō Ikebe's talent and contributions to the film industry were widely recognized, earning him prestigious awards such as the Blue Ribbon Award for Best Actor for his performances in "Aoi Sanmyaku" (1949) and "Akitsu Springs" (1962). Despite his remarkable early success, Ikebe stepped away from the spotlight in the latter part of his career, dedicating himself to writing and directing. He passed away on October 8, 2010, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Japanese cinema as a talented actor who helped shape the industry's post-war landscape.
