On this day of 1959, American soprano Renée Fleming was born in Indiana, Pennsylvania. Now spinning on my CD player one of her most famous recordings, Dvořák's opera 'Rusalka' from 1997. Sir Charles Mackerras conducts the Czech PO.

Of all world premiere opera recordings nominated for the Grammys 2026 of 'Best Opera Recording', I select the most conservative work 'Intelligence' by Jake Heggie, inspired by the true story of two American Civil War spies, Elizabeth Van Lew and Mary Jane Bowser.

On this day 1809, Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was born in Hamburg. I am listening to a record from 2008. Leonidas Kavakos conducts the Camerata Salzburg and performs Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in e minor, Op. 64.

On this day in 1885, Alban Berg was born in Vienna. Here is a great recording of a great work: the 1951 recording of his 1st opera, 'Wozzeck'. Dimitri Mitropoulos conducts the NYP.

On this day of 1947, John Adams was born in Worcester, Massachusetts. I recommend (if you dare) to listen to the 1987 recording of his opera 'Nixon in China', which received the 1988 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Composition in the Classical category.  Edo de Waart leads the Chorus and Orchestra of St. Luke's.

On this day of 1760, Czech composer Jan Ladislav Dussek was born. A characteristic examplen of his work is his Messe Solemnelle in G major. Richard Egarr conducts the Academy of Ancient Music.

On this day 1962, French composer Jacques Ibert died in Paris aged 71. On my record plyer now spinning his 1st opera 'Persée et Andromède' which premiered in 1921, with Yann Beuron and Annick Massis in the title roles.

On this day 2004, Iannis Xenakis died in Paris aged 79. If your ears are brave enough, I recommend his chamber music performed by the Arditti quartet. I was fortunate enough to experience a live performance of Tetras, Tetora and Ikhoor, in 1992 in Delphi, with the composer present among the audience.

On this day of 1927, Austrian composer and music teacher Robert Fuchs died in Vienna aged 80. On my CD player, his violin sonatas 1, 2 and 3, with Hyejin Chung (violin) and Warren Lee (piano).

On this day of 1909, Polish composer Mieczysław Karłowicz died at the age of 32 in an avalanche while skiing on an excursion in the Tatra Mountains. Here is a record, a compilation of his orchestral works, that introduces his musical style. Yan Pascal Tortelier conducts the BBC PO.

On this day 1901, Jascha Heifetz was born in Vilnius. I recommend his 1959 recording of Sibelius' violin concerto which is considered one of his best recordings. Walter Hendl conducts the Chicago SO.

On this day of 1927, Leontyne Price was born in Laurel, Mississippi. I recommend the 1962 recording of her most acclaimed role, 'Aida' which won the 1963 Grammy Award for Best Opera recording. Sir Georg Solti conducts the Orchestra del Teatro dell' Opera di Roma.
