Taught myself to sing Der Hölle Rache (Queen of the night) in the car

Sung it (while shaking like a chihuahua of nervousness) for an audition into Opera North, to my great surprise I became a Soprano that day! Also sung l'ho perduta me meschina, hilariously this is me in a nutshell.

Renée Fleming

On this day of 1959, American soprano Renée Fleming was born in Indiana, Pennsylvania. Now spinning on my CD player one of her most famous recordings, Dvořák's opera 'Rusalka' from 1997. Sir Charles Mackerras conducts the Czech PO. (edited)

Victoria de los Ángeles

On rhis day 2005, Spanish lyric soprano Victoria de los Ángeles died in Barcelona aged 81. I recommend the 1962 recording of Rossini's 'Il barbiere di Sevilla', with Sesto Bruscantini as Figaro and Luigi Alva as Conte Almaviva.
