Every DM has their own style of play. I figured out that the best and most fun campaigns have been those that are completely improvised. It requires less effort for you to plan and prepare for. Just start with a basic simple idea and let the players figure out how to go about completing it. Let the dice choose the path and obstacles that the players face. If the quest is too simple, add an extra detail that will make the players think there may be more to it and then roll with what idea they come up with. It makes it interesting for both the party and the DM.
