Any Metroid fans out there? How do you feel about members of the Federation tagging along on some of your expeditions?

Based on what I’ve seen in some previews, I am not feeling the dialogue for Miles. It’s jarring hearing some dweeb trying to tell Samus, an export bounty hunter, what to do. I also can’t stand the MCU/Disney comedic relief lines he seems to be prone to.

Hoping the other members you come across aren’t as annoying and the segments with them are a very small fraction of the full game.

Legend of Zelda was such an important game series for me as an over thinker who always wanted to know the right thing to do. The world of Zelda provided clear answers and unquestioned objective morality. It gave me a mission. It gave me landmarks. It gave me a compass. It said, go here and do this. I was called out to by the Tri Force, to have courage, to seek wisdom, to conquer and to overcome power.


I was led to dark dungeons, desolate forests, empty, forlorn oceans. I delved into the darkness. I faced my fears, I gathered the tools and skills necessary, and then I overcame evil. I saved Hyrule, and I renewed the Triforce.


All of this was part of a more or less endless narrative loop within the Zelda series, the never ending struggle and necessity that the every man stand up and fight against that which is evil, that which is wrong, that which will destroy us all.


It was awesome.


It was easy.


And much like childhood should be, it was simple as well.


There was no questioning of the morality of my mission. Just as children don't often have the life experiences or facets to understand complex moral nuance, so too does the world of Legend of Zelda not offer any greater answers beyond the simple hero's journey, the calling to face your fear, the calling to have courage. And for most of us, that's all we needed.


But as we get older, as we grow up, the nostalgic message of the simple hero, with the straightforward journey to slay evil with courage and wisdom begins to ring a bit hollow.


It doesn't lose any of its inspirational power, but as you drift through your 20s, approach your 30s, you start to wonder if life can ever be that simple or fulfilling, if there really are right or wrong answers to any of the problems we face, or if it's all just illusion, if it's all just gaslighting, optics, rhetoric, power dynamics, and control.


Is any of it real, or are we just being manipulated?


Do my choices and motivations matter?


We ask these questions and we are overwhelmed, because, honestly, there are not many people who are both emotionally and intellectually equipped to find those answers without facing themselves in such a way that life becomes unnavigable; for in searching out those moral answers amidst the chaos of life with a truly objective lens, you risk undermining the foundations of your own moral framework, your own sense of Truth, right and wrong, and if you are unlucky enough to fail in your quest for those answers, you are left drifting in a sea of darkness with no stars to guide you. In this state, the only option left is to wait for death while you try not to imagine what leviathans lurk beneath you.


It's overwhelmingly smothering to lose yourself in this, the quest for those answers, in the quest for truth, right and wrong. Because let's face it, in a world this complex, something like objective truth seems utterly fantastical.


But despite this, like me, many of you may have found a gem of a game called Dark Souls, made by a gem of a company called Fromsoft. I hope that I'm not over generalizing when I say that, it seems the overlap between Zelda kids and Fromsoft fans, is not insubstantial.


But why is this?


You see, when we enter any of the Fromsoft worlds, we follow a very similar path, almost an echo of a memory, of a familiar quest. We are brought up from nothing, a hollow, an unkindled, a tarnished, a pale blood, and we are told by a powerful but mysterious deity that we should seek out an evil being, slay them and set the cycle right.


Be good, be the hero, slay the dragon, restore order to the world: This is our charge and of course, like good heroes, we cling to it. That's what we love. It's what we're used to. It's what we've craved since childhood. But as we explore these games and pursue this goal, it becomes quickly apparent that our journey will not be so straightforward as we had hoped or remembered. In a manner tragically evocative of real life, Dark Souls gives us no easy answers, no clear direction and no outwardly fair challenges, at least not as we perceive them at the time. Every one of the multiple directions you're given feel like the wrong way. Everything is brutal. Everything is fast and lethal. 


You don't have the levels, you don't have the tools, you don't have the knowledge to navigate these trials. You start to wonder, Why me? Why was I chosen to pursue this mission if I'm no better than the beef jerky hollows running around killing me with broken swords?




Many give up at this point. They say it's too complicated, too difficult, too brutal, too dark.
But many of us, I dare say most of us who picked the game up, took the challenge at some point and decided to put our heads down and really conquer this adventure.


And the brilliant thing about the Fromsoft portrayal of the hero's journey is that as adults, even though we initially feel overwhelmed when we play this game, like maybe it's too 'on the nose' in its representation of our day to day struggle to find purpose direction: we still manage to keep going.


The more that we learn, the more that we fail, the more that we make mistakes, the more that we try to better ourselves in this context, the easier the game gets. We start to realize that there is an underlying, chaotic order to everything, a structure to our struggle.


As we navigate this, we actually make progress. We overcome greater and greater obstacles. We fell greater and greater foes, and we start to feel like just maybe we found the right path, maybe we're doing the right thing.


But of course, it's never that simple, because just as that feeling of certainty begins to solidify itself, it is just as quickly snatched away when we meet characters who openly question or decry the beings who tasked us. The so called deities who resurrected us in the first place. 


Perhaps they are not who they have portrayed themselves as? Is Gwyn truly a Lord of Light, or is he an usurper of power who has used rhetoric to frame darkness as righteousness?


Is Queen Marika and her golden order really helping the world by removing destined death from the cycle of life, by keeping everyone in a perpetual loop of decay and renewal without the purpose and landmarks of a beginning and a final true end.


As we begin to question our mission, we are no more dissuaded from pursuing the end than we were before. But we are wary.


And what I think is the beautiful thing about the Souls games is that when you reach the end, you can look back on all the paths you took, all the enemies you slew, all the places you went, the items you gathered, the weapons that you honed, the muscle memory that you painstakingly developed; and you can say


"You know, maybe there was a better way that I could have done this." 
"Maybe I could have gotten through with fewer deaths or with more souls."
"Maybe there was a shorter path I could have taken."
"Maybe I could have gotten through without engaging so many enemies."
"Maybe I could have parried instead of blocking."
"Maybe I could have succeeded in a way that hurt less."


"Maybe."


"Maybe I talked to the wrong NPCs." 
"Maybe I swore the wrong allegiances." 
"Maybe I should have gone with a different option."


But ultimately, when you complete one of these games, you stand at the top of one of their cascading tower level designs on a vista where you can look back and see what you've overcome and conquered.


You don't look back and experience regret for the mistakes that you made getting to this point, you look back and you feel pride, pride that despite those mistakes, despite those stumbles and hours of struggle, you're not down there anymore.


You're up here. 


You're closer to your goal, and regardless of whether that goal is the ultimate right or wrong, whether the God that you're chasing is the right one, that grand contextualization of the morality begins to lose its meaning when set beside the simple rote morality of the question; 


"Am I choosing to give up, or am I choosing to push forward?"


And you know, when we complete these games Fromsoft doesn't even give us the grand answers. After we complete the story, we're given a brief scene of the outcome, but no guidance as to whether linking the flame or creating an age of darkness, lighting the frenzied flame or sending Ronnie to the stars was the best choice morally for the world as a whole. Despite this we also don't care anymore, because no matter what happens at the end, we're proud of how we lived, of how we fought to get there.


Maybe we made mistakes, maybe we helped the wrong person, but that's not what defines our journey. Our journey isn't defined by the end, not in our minds. It's defined by the steps we took along the way. 


And I think that's the beautiful thing about Dark Souls, about Fromsoft as a whole. In a world where we lose our joy, where innocence is fleeting sometimes the right thing feels like the wrong thing and the wrong thing is gilded like a Trojan horse,


Dark Souls strips all that away and says "You know, it's more important to make sure that you don't give up. It's more important that you find the light in every moment than that you worry about the entire world. You chase the bonfires, you make it from refuge to refuge. And you try to keep going. You try to keep doing the right thing, and at the end, even if it doesn't turn out all right, you will be proud of the person you've become along the way."
