For years now, there’s been a persistent rumor within the game development industry: that console players are becoming progressively less skilled, and therefore increasingly dependent on simplifications and assistance systems.
Features like extensive hand-holding tutorials, heavy aim assist, auto quests, and simplified combat mechanics are often cited as evidence that modern games are being “dumbed down.” These accusations come up again and again when discussing contemporary game design.
Back in the arcade era, things were very different. You couldn’t save whenever you wanted. You couldn’t regenerate infinite lives. Everything was designed to push players to improve through repetition, failure, and mastery, without being given constant help. Skill wasn’t optional; it was the experience.
I’m speaking both as a gamer and as a developer. I own a game development and publishing company, and this topic comes up frequently when I talk with other studios. I’ve experienced this issue firsthand: two of my titles were criticized for being “too difficult” or for having “too few explanations of the controls,” even though the control scheme used barely five buttons.
I’m primarily a PC gamer, used to minimal tutorials and learning systems through experimentation. I love games like Arc Raiders, Escape from Tarkov, and League of Legends, games that don’t explain everything to you. Tarkov, especially, gives you almost no help at all, and yet I don’t see that as a flaw. For me, that is the experience. The same applies to Dark Souls, which throws you into battle and forces you to die over and over until you understand how to move, react, and improve.
I don’t believe this situation is the players’ fault. I believe it’s largely the result of companies choosing, over the years, to prioritize visual fidelity over deep, immersive gameplay. Let’s be honest, how many of you would prefer a game with simple or even poor graphics but truly unique gameplay, over a visually stunning game that only offers four basic actions?
Have you noticed how MMORPGs went from having three full skill bars to barely five buttons?
So here’s the real question. Yes, companies played their part, investing more money into visuals than mechanics.
But why did players accept it?

Management games are probably one of the most addiction indusing genres/sub cultures in gaming. There have been studies into the theory of gaming in management sims to some degree proving the level of "addiction" these games can generate in the brains biochemical feedback loop.

That being said, a healthy dosage and these games can be super fun. Personally my favorite and number one that I will keep coming back to is factorio. Sure I fold and turn the enemies into peaceful critters at my mercy to bully when I have time, but I love getting lost in these mechanics without the urgency of creep waves. Once I have mastered a few of the basic mechanics and blueprints then for sure I am going to give hostile a try.
