May 22, 1943 #OTD World War II: American TBF aircraft from the 14,000-ton USS Bogue attacked the German submarine U-569, forcing her to surface and surrender. Pictured: Photos of an attack of two U.S. Navy Grumman TBF Avenger aircraft from the aircraft carrier USS Bogue (CVE-9) on the German Type VIIC submarine U-569 on 22 May 1943. The submarine had to be scuttled in the North Atlantic, after being badly damaged by depth charges. 21 sailors were killed aboard, the captain, two officers and 22 ratings survived and were rescued an hour later by HMCS St. Laurent (H83).
