They broke in and never told me.
No footprints. No broken lock. No warning.
One day, I simply stopped being alone.
They settled into the hidden places of the house. Beneath my bed, inside the closets, behind the shower curtain. In the silence between the floorboards. Patient. Breathing softly enough for me to mistake it for the house settling.
I only knew because I started noticing things.
The dip in the mattress when I got up to use the bathroom.
The shower steam carrying the smell of someone else's skin.
Objects moved an inch to the left.
Cabinet doors I swore I'd closed hanging open like mouths.
I tried convincing myself I was tired. Stressed. Losing track of things.
But then I started feeling watched.
Not the dramatic kind of watched. Nothing cinematic.
Something worse.The slow, nauseating certainty that every ordinary, humiliating part of being alive had become an audience event.
The way I ate standing over the sink.
The way I picked at my skin.
The way I sat in the dark scrolling through old conversations, rereading messages from people who had already forgotten me.
The way I cried without making noise.
Nothing belonged to me anymore.
Not my apartment.
Not my body.
Not even my loneliness.They loved me.
I think.
Obsessively. Completely. The way children love insects pinned inside glass jars.
I loved me, too. That's what made this unbearable.
I knew the shape of my laugh.
The exact shade of my eyes after crying.
The stories behind every scar.
I had spent years learning how to become 
someone I could survive being.
So why was I disappearing?
Who were they?
The question followed me room to room.
Who were they?
Because every time I caught my reflection in a mirror, the answer felt closer.
Something was wrong with it.
At first, it was little things.
A smile that lingered too long.
A blink half a second late.
The expression of someone pretending to be me after studying me for years.
I stopped looking directly at mirrors.
Then one morning, exhausted and shaking, I accidentally met my own gaze.I couldn't breathe.
The person looking back at me wore my face the way a stranger wears stolen clothing.
Perfect enough to pass.
Wrong enough to terrify.
I touched the glass.
The reflection hesitated.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
I stumbled backward so quickly I hit the bathroom door hard enough to bruise.
My reflection didn't move.It just stood there.
Watching me.
Confused.
Almost pitying.
As if it couldn't understand why I was frightened.
As if it genuinely believed I was the intruder.
I don't sleep much anymore.
I leave the television on.
I check under the bed until my knees ache.
I avoid mirrors whenever possible.
Because sometimes, passing one in the hallway, 
I catch movement from the corner of my eye.
Someone standing inside the glass.
Waiting for me to look.
Waiting for me to remember that I was never alone.
Last night, I covered every mirror in the apartment with blankets.
This morning, every blanket was folded neatly on the floor.
The mirrors were uncovered.
I stood in front of one for almost an hour.
The woman staring back looked exhausted.
Terrified.
She pressed her palm against the glass.
I pressed mine against it too.
Our hands didn't quite line up.
"Turn it off," I whispered.
The woman in the mirror smiled.
I didn't.
