It's metric tensor is only in 2 dimensions. So I figured it's just a 2D surface

Technically it is 3D, but the radius is kept constant, not changing. You only need two coordinates to find your place in this manifold. 

I've been doing. All of my stuff differently than my book, driving the metric tensor in cylindrical coordinates...not spherical or 2-sphere. Guess I learned why spherical is preferred
I thought cylindrical would be easier to deal with (I guess it is but it isn't really interesting.) cylindrical is flat apparently
