In the West, we have become accustomed to a particular form of Yoga, which has been appropriated and commoditised. We know this as Hatha or Vinyasa Yoga. There's even an "official" Yoga governing body but that's a story for another time.

The purpose of this post is not to take anything away from Hatha and Vinyasa Yoga, as taught in the West, but to bring to light the history of the real purpose of Yoga. There are 4 branches of Yoga: Karma, Bhakti, Jnana, and Raja Yoga. These are ancient practices dating back to about ~1000 BC.

Karma Yoga: The path of service through selfless action.

Bhakti Yoga: The path of devotion (similar to the Theistic religions).

Jnana Yoga: The Path of Knowledge (Intellect and Wisdom).

Raja Yoga: The King of Yogas. The path of meditation.

We are missing out on so much rich knowledge, and I would encourage everyone to explore Yoga more deeply.
