After completing his studies, his outstanding academic performance at the university earned him a position as a physics and mathematics teacher in the same institution. However, he resigned from the university in 1867 and got a position as a assistant astronomer in Helsinki Observatory. During his career as an astronomer, Westerlund is remembered for his discovery of a number of stars, and his contribution in defining and creating a catalog for the stars he discovered. His notable catalog is the Westerlund catalog, which contains a list of hundreds of stars. He also made several astronomical discoveries and he is credited with discovering a comet in 1868. Westerlund retired in 1905 but his legacy still lives on in the scientific community as he played a significant role in the development of astronomy in Finland. In recognition of his contribution to science, Westerlund was awarded the title of Knight of the Order of St. Olav by King Oscar II of Norway in 1898.
