Noble Johnson was an African-American actor, filmmaker, and independent producer who played an important role in the early Hollywood film industry. Born on April 18, 1881, in Marshall, Missouri, Johnson's family moved to Colorado when he was young. He grew up in a household that valued education, and he went on to attend high school and college in Colorado. After graduating from Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri, Johnson taught and worked as a principal before moving to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting. In 1915, Johnson made his film debut in the silent film The Birth of a Nation. He quickly became known for his imposing physical presence and commanding screen presence, even in small roles. He appeared in over 90 films over the course of his career, including classics like The Thief of Bagdad, The Mummy, and King Kong. Johnson was often cast in minor roles or bit parts, but he brought a sense of gravitas and dignity to every role he played. In addition to acting, Johnson was also an independent producer and filmmaker. In 1920, he founded Lincoln Motion Picture Company with his brother George. The company was the first African-American-owned film production company in the United States, and it produced films that focused on Black stories and actors. Although the company only lasted for a few years, it was an important step forward in the representation of Black people in film. Despite facing racism and discrimination throughout his career, Johnson remained committed to his craft and to advocating for greater opportunities for Black actors and filmmakers. He passed away on January 9, 1978, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneer in the film industry and a role model for generations of Black actors and filmmakers.
