Karl von Holtei was a famous German writer, poet, and actor who lived during the 19th century. He was well known for his plays and novels, many of which were widely popular during his lifetime. He was born Christian Friedrich Ludwig von Holtei on January 24th, 1798, in Breslau, Silesia (now Wroclaw, Poland). He was the son of a Prussian officer and grew up in a military family. After completing his education, Karl von Holtei began working as an actor in various theaters throughout Germany. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented performer, and his roles in classical plays, such as William Shakespeare's Hamlet and Richard III, brought him even more recognition. As he gained more success in the theater, he also began writing his first plays and poems. One of Karl von Holtei's most famous works is his play "Lena," which was first performed in 1839. The play tells the story of a young girl who is falsely accused of a crime and sentenced to prison. It became extremely popular and was translated into several languages, including French and English. Another one of his popular works is the romantic novel "Die Vagabunden," which was published in 1833. Despite his success in both writing and acting, Karl von Holtei was known to have a turbulent personal life. He married several times and was known for his gambling habits and financial struggles. However, his work continued to be celebrated by many, and he remained an important figure in German literature until his death on February 12th, 1880, in Bad Freienwalde, Germany.
