Doc Rivers is an American professional basketball coach and former player. Rivers was born on October 13, 1961, in Chicago, Illinois. His full name is Glenn Anton Rivers. Rivers' father was a police officer and he grew up in a working-class family. He attended a predominantly white high school in Maywood, Illinois, and played basketball for four years. Rivers earned a basketball scholarship to Marquette University, where he played basketball from 1980 to 1983. In 1983, Rivers was selected by the Atlanta Hawks in the second round, 31st overall, in the NBA draft. He played for the Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers, New York Knicks, and San Antonio Spurs. In 14 NBA seasons, Rivers played in 864 games, scoring 9,377 points, averaging 10.9 points per game. Rivers retired from playing in 1996 and started his coaching career shortly after. Doc Rivers' coaching career began in 1999 with the Orlando Magic. He coached the Magic for four seasons before being hired by the Boston Celtics in 2004. Rivers coached the Celtics for nine seasons, winning an NBA championship in 2008. In 2013, he was hired by the Los Angeles Clippers as their head coach, where he coached for seven seasons. In 2020, Rivers was hired by the Philadelphia 76ers as their head coach. Over the course of his career, Doc Rivers has coached some of the best players in NBA history, including Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen. He is known for his ability to motivate players and get the best out of them.
