He started his acting career in 1926 playing a small role in the British film 'The Passing of the Third Floor Back'. Laughton worked in the British film industry for a number of years before he moved to Hollywood and began his career as an actor in American films. He made over 50 appearances on Broadway and in films, including some of the most acclaimed films of the era such as 'Mutiny on the Bounty', 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame', and 'Witness for the Prosecution'. His performances were critically acclaimed, and he was awarded an Academy Award for Best Actor in 1933. Apart from acting, Laughton was also a well-known producer and director. He directed only one film, the 1955 classic 'The Night of the Hunter' which is considered one of the greatest films of all time. In addition to his contributions in acting, directing and producing, Laughton was also an accomplished Broadway theater director. Charlies Laughton passed away on December 15, 1962 in Los Angeles, California. He was 63 years old at the time of his death.
