Who would have better Morale soldier wise religious fanatics or Atheistic Communists?

Genuine question, because I got to thinking someone would be much more willing to sacrifice themselves, if they truly did believe some magical afterlife existed for them, correct after death? Or does the thought of death not occur to most soldiers because the adrenaline is running too much? (edited)
