I was at church today, just hanong out with my age group andnit was such a nicely spend time. I am growing to the community i found and i think i am finally goong on a path to find the Father love i always missed.

ST THERESE CHURCH

Good morning!

A guy bumps into me as I’m walking into the restaurant.
A sting shoots down my spine—old pinched nerves from the military reminding me that my body keeps score whether I want it to or not. It wasn’t intentional, so I accept his earnest apology and keep moving.
The hostess greets me with the most robotic line corporate training ever produced. I hear the same line over and over again for the next fifty minutes while I wait for a table, like a recording stuck on loop. Finally, I’m seated. The hostess quietly removes the second place setting when she realizes I’m alone. The friend I invited couldn’t make it—family obligations.
As I look around the dining room, I see a sea of families in various stages of conversation, all shouting over a room so loud I can barely hear my server repeat my order back to me. I reach for my device—that little brick with fancy lights I hate to admit I hold all day. Headphones in. Volume up. World drowned out. I sip my iced tea in careful rations because the waitress is slammed and my little table in the corner is invisible.
Just another day in paradise.
“That sounds amazing,” you might say.
If you’re a parent with toddlers tugging at you, begging for snacks like hungry hobbits singing for second breakfast… yeah, I get it. A quiet meal alone might sound like heaven.
And maybe it is—for a little while.
But talk to any parent who’s been away from home for more than thirty days. Eventually, they start to miss sticky fingers, loud hugs, and the chaos of the family they helped create. Solitude is sweet—until it isn’t.
For me, that “sweet spot” lasted about ten years.
Ten years of making every decision alone.
Ten years of walking into an empty house.
Ten years of having full conversations with my furniture.
Ten years of yelling at Alexa to turn on the lights like she’s the only one who listens anymore.
It gets old. Very old. It feels very much like someone, or something is missing from my life.
So where do you go when you’re in over your head?
Church, of course.
Small groups.
Marriage courses.
Valentine’s events.
Family fun nights.
And honestly? Church helps. It really does.
But imagine you walk into a church that’s almost all single people, and the sermon series for six weeks is about finding a godly spouse. Then small group talks about home-buying strategies “for when you’re married someday.” And then the workshops focus on being content in your singleness—while everyone waits for God to finally deliver a spouse like Amazon Prime.
That church starts to feel a lot like that restaurant.
Not built for you.
Not thinking about you.
Not even sure where you’re supposed to sit.
The Reality: One-Third of the Church Is Single
Most research puts singleness in the church at 33% or higher. And as marriage rates decline, that number will only grow.
Yet many churches are hesitant to create spaces for singles.
I’ve been told:
“It’s too risky. Issues like LGBTQIA+ identity and premarital sex come up, and we don’t want to deal with it.”
To which I respond:
“Those issues happen with married folks too. But no one cancels the six-month marriage series because someone’s spouse ran off with someone else.”
If that’s true—then why are singles treated like a pastoral liability instead of part of the Body?
So, What Do We Do?
Maybe we stop pretending the grass is greener on the other side.
Married people experience a busy loneliness.
Singles experience a quite loneliness.
Both groups assume the other has it easier, and neither wants to say out loud:
“I feel alone.”
What if instead of separating singles and marrieds like oil and water, we created spaces they could both enjoy?
A dance night.
Game nights.
Workshops.
Competitions.
Cooking classes.
Service projects.
Places where adults—single or married—can just be people with other people.
Not everything needs to be a marriage seminar.
Not everything needs to be a singles devotional about “waiting well.”
Sometimes people just need a place to breathe.
Because when people don’t have healthy community, they drift.
They explore things out of boredom, pain, curiosity, or loneliness.
They make choices that are less about sin and more about trying to stop the ache inside their chest.
And churches?
We can help reduce that ache.
The Truth: Loneliness Doesn’t End With Marriage
This is the part no one really says out loud:
Singles crave family.
Married people crave community.
And neither gets their needs fully met just by achieving the other’s lifestyle.
A spouse does not fix communal loneliness.
Children do not fix communal loneliness.
Meaningful Community does.
Deep, Christ-centered, shoulder-to-shoulder I know you my brother/sister and I’m with you community.
Not, “hello how are you fellowship” “share your problems and go home” community. I’m talking about The kind of community that sits with you in your pain. Walks with you in your good and bad choices. And helps you make life decisions together.
So What’s the Solution?
And if you know me in IRL, I definitely don’t have the perfect formula to fix the church worlds problems.
No one does.
But I do know this:
If singles and married people don’t start seeing each other’s struggles…
If churches don’t create spaces designed for both…
If we all keep acting like loneliness is everyone else’s problem…
We’re going to starve.
Starve in a sea of disconnection.
Starve in a culture obsessed with competition.
Starve while feeding on glowing bricks and devices like turkish delight that will never satisfy.
Starve because , like it or not, we all need to be known by a safe community
Starve while sitting at our small tables in the corner, rationing iced tea and pretending we’re fine.
But we’re not fine.
We were made for meaningful community
We were made for God.
And we were made for each other.
And until we start building spaces where both singles and marrieds can thrive—not in separate corners but side-by-side—we will continue to feel the ache of relationships we don’t have instead of enjoying the community God designed us for. Someone is missing… maybe that someone is you!
