That assertion really depends on the family (and number of kids) and what that one job was. This idealized view of the 50's has some very "white middle-class" tinted glasses associated with them.

All it took was all of our customers nearly annihilating their own industrial bases so that the USA was a primary source of finished goods, which is a bit of a unique and unrecoverable thing.

As for college, it was cheap enough that kids could conceivably work through it a bit more easily at the time, though.
