Assuming we're talking about the European age of discovery/exploration then "an advance" would be the better of the two.
Filling in the world map, major technological growth, connecting parts of the world only vaguely dreamed of and etc.
Yes you did have the major mixing of deises pools and genocides, however it is rather weak compatision for the worst period in history. The bronze age collapse, fall of Rome, the black death and the Mongol invasions (just to name a few) blow it out of the water.
