Should a setting have people being able to read by default ?

Just a thought for my own medieval fantasy setting. Should people know how to read by default? Or only if they have a high enough Wisdom stat ? Or maybe it's a capacity/trait ? It would make it more realistic bur I'm worried it would become a bit of a pain for the players

ZacSpeakGiant Just read the most fun sounding suggestion that makes it wild. Your character sheet is blank and only the DM knows your character information and you have to progressively learn your character throughout the game. Kinda fun for introducing a new player who comes mid game.
