Ben E. King

Ben E. King Bio

Benjamin Earl King was an American R&B and soul singer best known for his hit song "Stand by Me." King was born on September 28, 1938, in Henderson, North Carolina, and grew up in Harlem, New York. He started singing in church at a young age and was inspired by gospel music. King's early influences included Nat King Cole, Sam Cooke, and the Ink Spots. King began his career in the late 1950s as a member of the vocal group The Drifters. He sang lead on such hits as "This Magic Moment" and "Save The Last Dance For Me." However, his time with the group was brief, as he left to pursue a solo career in 1960. In 1961, King released "Stand by Me," which became a massive hit and went on to become one of the most beloved songs in the history of pop music. In addition to "Stand by Me," King had other hits, such as "Spanish Harlem" and "Don't Play That Song (You Lied)," both of which reached the top 10 on the pop charts. King continued recording and touring throughout the 1960s and 1970s but gradually faded from the charts. He remained a beloved figure, however, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. King passed away on April 30, 2015, in Hackensack, New Jersey, at the age of 76. He left behind a rich legacy of soulful, heartfelt music that continues to inspire and move listeners around the world.
