An octopus mother will guard her eggs for 4 years —never leaving or feeding.

And that makes her one of the most devoted parents on the planet.

 Scientists observed this in a deep-sea species called Graneledone boreopacifica. And what they found was almost unbelievable. After laying her eggs, the female octopus gives up everything. She stops hunting. She stops moving. Her only job becomes protection. Her brain essentially shuts down, except for one part called the optic glands, which stay active. 

Those glands are crucial. 

Without them, she would abandon the eggs and start feeding again. But with them active, she stays. The mother remains almost completely still for months, sometimes years, depending on the species. She shows no interest in food, even when it’s placed right in front of her. 

Over time, her skin turns a ghostly white from starvation. Biologists believe this extreme behavior exists to protect the eggs from predators. Octopus mothers only lay eggs once in their entire lives. And when the eggs finally hatch, the mother usually dies soon after. 

That final sacrifice ensures one thing. She will never consume her own young.

My old flat used to overlook a dog park in Battersea and I'd watch the doggos being trained. 

It was always disappointing when the dog training went well.

But often it would quickly desolve into furry chaos, dogs jumping up, running around madly and barking their little hearts out. 

Am I bad preferring doggo chaos? 🤔
